According to Sky Sports, Crystal Palace are interested in signing striker Jordan Ayew after the Ghana international was relegated with Swansea City at the end of last season.
What’s the story?
Ayew is valued at just £7.2m by Transfermarkt and netted 11 goals for the Swans last season in all competitions. The BBC reported in June that Fulham had bid £8m for the 26-year-old which was rejected by the Championship new boys.
Palace boss Roy Hodgson has so far added just two players to his squad in the form of midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate from West Ham and 31-year-old goalkeeper Vicente Guaita. However, The Guardian reports that German international Max Meyer is close to joining the Eagles on a free transfer.
If Ayew does come through the door at Selhurst Park, it will push Englishman Connor Wickham down the pecking order and the 25-year-old should look to force a move in order to secure first-team action next season.
The perfect destination
Fellow Championship new boys West Brom should look to take advantage of Swansea’s sale by targetting Palace’s Wickham when the deal goes through. With Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez still hoping to sign West Brom’s Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon and Dwight Gayle looking like he’ll stay on Tyneside, according to the Chronicle, the Baggies will be on the lookout for a new striker.
If Rondon does leave, West Brom boss will be left with just Hal Robson-Kanu and Jay Rodriguez as senior strikers, neither of which could hold the ball up as well as Wickham.
The 6ft 3in striker is valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt and has 22 goals in 87 Championship games following previous campaigns with Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds. If the Ayew and Rondon deals both go through, Wickham could be the ideal replacement for West Brom.
